Can the new AI tool ChatGPT replace human work? Judge for yourself
There’s a new artificial intelligence tool in town, and it’s getting a lot of attention.
Discussion GPT A program where users type in a question or task and the software provides a response designed to mimic a human. It was trained using billions of text examples on the internet.
“One of its key distinguishing features is its ability to understand and generate natural language. This means it can provide natural, conversational responses, making it a useful tool for many applications.”
Or so the chatbot says about itself – ChatGPT wrote the paragraph above.
It is not clear how much the processing device actually “understands” language. But it’s turning heads.
“You can find something that sounds terrifying in a human conversation, so I was a little surprised,” says Osh Momoh, chief technical advisor at MARS, an innovation center in Toronto.
The tool was created by OpenAI, a San Francisco-based research and development firm co-founded by Peter Thiel and Elon Musk that counts Microsoft among its investors.
ChatGPT has captured the public’s imagination because it is so easy to use. It was launched to the world just 11 days ago and has amassed more than a million users – gaining adoption faster than Facebook, which took ten months to reach the same milestone.
But even the company behind it has acknowledged challenges, including a tendency to create “nonsense” along the way.
Ask anything
The questions given to the bot can be silly, like asking him to write a movie script about elephants riding roller coasters, or asking him to explain the complicated history of the Middle East. He can write. Songs, Law school essaysAnd even computer code.
Momoh says the bot is better than anything before it at generating text responses to real human questions. It suggests that people can use ChatGPT as a tool to increase their productivity, especially in areas such as customer service, advertising and media.
“In a year or two, I think it will affect basically anything that involves generating text,” he said.
While that artificial intelligence may raise concerns about putting people out of work, Melanie Mitchell, a computer scientist at the Santa Fe Institute, expects jobs to change as workers are no longer required to complete repetitive tasks.
“Technology takes jobs and creates jobs in unexpected places,” she says.
‘Wrong or nonsensical answers’
The AI tool is in its early stages and users are realizing its limitations.
ChatGPT has no way of distinguishing whether the responses it generates are true or false. That’s a big problem, Mitchell says, and for now, using bots responsibly requires careful human-reality analysis.
“He said a lot of accurate things about me, looking for my own name, but he said I was going to die on November 28, 2022, which was a little disturbing to read.”
OpenAI recognized The tool’s tendency to respond with “painful-sounding but inaccurate or nonsensical answers,” an issue he found challenging to fix.
Releasing ChatGPT to the public can help OpenAI find and fix bugs. Although the site is programmed to eliminate inappropriate practices, such as soliciting advice for illegal activities, or biased or offensive inquiries, some users still find ways around the guard rails.
Because it is trained in an existing language, AI technology perpetuates societal biases around race, gender, and culture.
“So what are the consequences of those answers? Maybe not on me or you, but again on a little kid or someone who is trying to form their worldview on some difficult topic,” said Sheldon Fernandez, CEO. Darwin AI is working on using AI for manufacturing.
Still, some in the field, like Fernandez, describe ChatGPT’s debut as a “seminal” moment. And as the bot gains public acceptance, it’s sparking debate over when and how it should be used — and who should control it.
“We have to think hard about that,” Fernandez said. “One of the challenges in this is that the technology often moves faster and faster than the legislatures can,” he said.
If the world is ready for it, ask ChatGPT himself and spit out this answer.
“It is important that society carefully consider these issues and develop a responsible approach to the use of AI technologies.”
